City West Link Road Section 3: review of environmental factors, Balmain Road, Leichhardt to Boomerang Street, Haberfield

The design of the City West Link Road was approved in 1986 following the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement. The City West Link Road has been developed by the Roads and Traffic Authority from Victoria Road, Rozelle to Parramatta Road, Five Dock. When complete the City West Link Road would provide a limited access arterial road which will relieve traffic congestion on Parramatta Road and discourage through traffic from using local residential streets in Leichhardt, Annandale, Rozelle and Haberfield. The Link Road is being designed and constructed in sections. The concept design for Section 3 has recently been reviewed in consultation with the community. This review involved a value management study and considered a range of options including the approved design, which extended some 70 metres into Iron Cove, a design which avoided Iron Cove entirely, and a tunnel. The need to maintain the amenity of local residents, minimise reclamation of Iron Cove and avoid the loss of public open space in Blackmore Park were some of the factors considered when choosing the design assessed in this REF.
