The Proposal relates to an 8.7km upgrading, including the duplication of the Brunswick Heads Bypass and the construction of a new dual carriageway between the Brunswick River and Yelgun. The works would commence approximately 500 metres north of Saddle Road, Brunswick Heads and rejoin the existing Highway near Stock Route Road at Yelgun. The Proposal adjoins the proposed Yelgun-Chinderah Upgrade. Design features of the Proposal include the provision of a high standard dual carriageway comprising four 3.5m traffic lanes with medians, shoulder/ breakdown lanes and verges (the Brunswick Heads Bypass duplication would be constructed on the western side of the existing Road). The design speed of the proposed Highway would be 100-110km/h. A new six lane bridge would be constructed across the Brunswick River (four lanes Highway traffic, two lanes dedicated local traffic). Two interchanges would be provided, allowing a full range of traffic movements, and local movements would be allowed through a series of overpasses, underpasses and local roundabouts. The Proposal also features the provision of a number of fauna underpasses and a range of other fauna mitigation measures such as exclusion fencing. An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project (dated July 1998) was prepared on behalf of the RTA by Sinclair Knight Merz.
