Prior to the preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement, the Roads and Traffic Authority undertook an extensive public consultation programme to ascertain the views of residents and others who might be affected by the proposal. Issues raised during this programme helped to define the scope of the Environmental Impact Statement and particular issues that required more detailed investigation. The public consultation programme included a period of community consultation which extended from 20 September 1988 to 18 October 1988. It included a series of public displays and the distribution of a brochure designed to obtain community input on the road alternatives. Upon consideration of the responses received, the Roads and Traffic Authority evaluated three additional alternatives that were based on suggestions from the community. The preferred proposal in this Environmental Impact Statement arose from that evaluation and subsequent investigations.
